Chipboard Chandelier/Mobiles

sweettweet2.jpg

Okay, talk about stinkin' cute! Have you guys seen these yet? It was featured on Apartment Therapy not too long ago and my good friend Patti is the genius behind it.

Anyway, she hooked me up with one of her Sweet Tweet chandeliers to decorate for my sister's baby that's due any day now! (Marisa, if you're reading this... pretend to be surprised when you get it for Christmas, okay?)

I've been working on covering this with patterned paper a little bit at a time all week. I even glued patterned paper to it and sanded it down while I was riding to Arizona in my brother's car on Tuesday! It's actually a really great thing to do while watching a movie, too (we watched Kung Fu Panda--so funny!).

It's made out of heavy-duty chipboard, and you can get it over at her Etsy shop. It's DIY so you can paint it or cover it with paper, or both. I chose to cover it in Sassafrass Lass paper and add some Papertrey Ink ribbon.

Here's to new babies! Babies! :) I'm getting a new niece and I'm so excited!

Ooo! Ooo! Patti's giving away one of her Glittering Tulip chandeliers. Go over to her blog to enter the drawing. :)

Finally Friday - So Grateful

112808-ff1.jpgGood morning, all! Hopefully not too many of you are out there today braving the after Thanksgiving sales! I've never gone shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but I find that I'm intrigued by it... Such good deals!

I'm much more the type that will stay at home and shop online. :)

Anyhow, I'm super grateful for all of you this Thanksgiving. And I hope you have a wonderful holiday. When I made this card earlier this week to display for today's Finally Friday video, I truly thought of all of you. I am extremely thankful for all of you. I feel like we have a great papercrafting community that is so supportive and helpful. :)

Click here to see more info and the supplies used. :)

So, here's the video! Enjoy, and catch it in higher quality over at YouTube (just click on "watch in high quality" below the video).

Hot-linking - more info & answering questions

I think I may have confused some of you. Sorry about that! :)

You are okay and NOT hot-linking if:
You right click on an image, save it to your computer, and then re-upload it to your blog.

You are hot-linking if:
You right click on an image, copy it, and then paste it into your blog. When you do this, the file is never saved on your computer. So when a reader of your blog loads your page, it tells their computer that the image it is loading is located on my webserver. That's when it uses my bandwidth.

So, in short, make sure you save the file to your computer first. Then you won't have any issues. :)

Hope that helped to clear things up.

On a side note: All of this was just presented as information to make you all aware of hot-linking. In no way am I saying I'm ungrateful for your readership, like a comment on the last entry suggested. It is actually quite the opposite. You guys are awesome! :)

------------

Attribution or providing a link back to the original webpage where you found an image does not affect whether an image is hot-linked or not. Attribution is simply a courtesy and points the reader in the right direction to see where the image came from.

Attribution might look like, "Image from SoAndSo's website." And have the word "SoAndSo" linked to their site so people can click on it and go there. Attribution is not required, but it's also considered the polite thing to do. :)

NOTE: I have disabled comments and hidden the ones that were already posted. This is not because I don't value each and every opinion. I did this because the conversation in the comments were bothering some people and leading to more misunderstandings. Just know that I only brought up hot-linking and attribution to help illustrate it and answer questions that new bloggers might have about hot-linking. If you have a question, please contact me.

On hot-linking and stealing images...

Ever since I've been dealing with bandwidth over usage (and having to increase my bandwidth with my webserver), I'm been very aware of hot-linking. Many of you might not be aware of what hot-linking is, or why it's bad.

For a quick definition, hot-linking is when a site adds one of my images to their site without uploading the image to their webserver or blogging software. Instead, they just include the link to my image. Essentially that means that when a person views their blog, the image that loads is coming directly from my webserver--it's like a leech pulling bandwidth from my webserver.

That's called stealing. And it's impolite. :(

For more info on hotlinking, see Julie's great entries here:
Just say "No."
More on hot-linking

And read the technical definition over at Wikipedia.

It's hard to explain, to so I tried to make some graphics... hopefully you'll all understand this...

hotlinking1.jpg
hotlinking2.jpg
hotlinking3.jpg

--------------

On stealing images... It has come to my attention that some bloggers out there are stealing my images and posting them on their own blogs without attribution or a link back to my site. This is also stealing.

It's a common practice to share images you've seen on the web as a way to alert people to great things they might want to see. You post a borrowed image and include a link back to the original image so that readers can see the original source.

95% of the time that I come across one of my images on someone else's blog it's because they have participated in one of the color challenges. They post the graphic I provide, their creation, and then a link back to my blog. That is the proper way to do this.

Similarly, when I post a graphic for a color challenge and it is from a different site, I always include a link back to the original product or image. It's a way to share things and color combos that I like. And I hope that the person or company that I'm linking to would be happy that I like what they are doing or selling.

So, in short, if it's not your image--if you did not take it with your camera--the best thing to do is seek permission to use it, and if that's not possible, at least be sure to include a link to the site your borrowing from. DO NOT include the direct image file on your blog (see hot-linking stuff above), but upload it to your site and then link to original blog post or site that you're borrowing from.

We all need to be a bit more polite. The only way to prevent any this happening is to simply stop sharing on the web, and I just find that depressing. So, let's all help each other out here and be respectful of each others images and bandwidth.

I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks for listening.

Color Inspiration #32

112508-color.jpg

Good morning! It's early here and I'm running around getting ready to go out town for the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be so great to just spend time with family, ya know? :)

Anyhow, this week's Color Inspiration Challenge comes to us from Crate and Barrel. They has some really beautiful Christmas stuff right now, and with it being exactly 1 month until Christmas (ahh!!), I thought I'd pick some Christmas-y colors. Hope you enjoy! This photo features their Oversized Lightbulb Ornament set.

A note on the colors... I really wanted to put a metallic color in there. So if you have some sort of gold or silver something, you can substitute it for the Sahara Sand color.

BTW, I moved the deadline out a bit longer than usual this week because of Thanksgiving. Ya'll have until Friday night. :)

Join us: Make a card/scrapbook page/whatever in the colors above. Color Inspiration virgins, please read the Color Inspiration FAQ first.

Deadline: Friday, November 28 at 7:00 pm MT.
You will know when the deadline has past because you will not able to submit a new link through the Mister Linky box.

Grab this week's swatch-only image.

MACM - Jolly Christmas

112408-macm.jpg Good morning, all!

Hmm... I'm not sure about this week's card. There's just something missing, ya know? Anyway, it was still fun to make. I don't watercolor very often so sometimes I forget how great it can be! :)

Also, I think this Santa stamp is from a retired Stampin' Up! set... Can any of you SU! fans out there tell me?

Before I get to the video, I just wanted to thank all of you who bought the Virtual Card Club PDF. You guys are awesome! And I'll definitely be able to cover my webhosting costs, with a bit extra. I want to thank you all, too, so I'll be giving away some prizes starting on the 1st of December. Think of it as an early Christmas gift. :) Be sure to check in starting next Monday. :)

So, here's the video. And I hope you enjoy it! Oh, and as usual, you can catch it in higher quality (just click on "watch in high quality" below the video).

Supplies - Watercolor paper, Naughty or Nice stamp set, watercolor crayons, AquaPainter, Real Red card stock, corner rounder punch (Stampin' Up!); patterned paper (American Crafts); Uniball Signo Gel Pen; Jolly Christmas stamp set (Hero Arts); chalk ink (Colorbox).

CI #31 Round-up

Hi, all!

Seriously, I feel like a proud mama when I see all your creations--especially because I can see improvement from all of you from week to week! It's definitely getting harder and harder to choose my top picks! Keep it up--I can't wait for the day when I just have to put everyone in the round-up! :)

Virtual Card Club, December 2008

Good morning, all!

Over the past few months I've had to upgrade my webhosting account twice because apparently all of my visitors to this blog are using up a TON of bandwidth. I'm both happy and worried about this. Happy because that means there are more of you visiting and I get to share with even more of you, and worried because I'm now paying a LOT more per month that I anticipated when I created this blog. Like a lot. More than I pay for my family plan on AT&T a lot.

Anyway, I've upgraded my hosting account to a high volume level, but that also means that it costs an arm and a leg to keep my blog up and running. In order to combat the costs (which are above how much I make with the ads), I decided I would start a Virtual Card Club! Hopefully this will be something that is valuable to you and it can help me out, too. :)

Here's the rundown on Virtual Card Club:
  • Whatever I design and plan for my in-real-life card club, I'll create a PDF with plenty of photos of the project, a full supply list, and brief instructions.
  • Every month, it will only cost $5 USD (Yes, those of you from other countries can buy it, too! :)
112108-virtualcardclub.jpg

For this month's card club, we made a 25 days of Christmas advent calendar! The $5 PDF is 7 pages and includes large photos of the finished project, individual shots of each number, tips and tricks for assembly, a full supply list, and ideas for what to put inside the advent calendar days.

I hope you all enjoy it! Please click on the Buy Now button below and it will take you to PayPal. NOTE: You will need Adobe Reader to view the file. Download it for free here.

NOTE: There was a minor error in the PDF for the first few minutes it was up. If you bought the PDF and are missing numbers 22-24 on the individual shots in the PDF, please reference the email that was sent to you after your purchase and click on the download link again. If you have questions, email me.

--------------------

Just to clarify a few things about Virtual Card Club... Yes, there will be a new PDF each month with a new project. It will always be just $5. You can buy it one month and not the next, or however you'd like.

Also, I'll be keeping all the Virtual Card Club PDFs online and available to purchase whenever you'd like. So if next holiday season comes around and you'd like to see the advent calendar, it will still be here. I eventually want to create a page that just has Virtual Card Club stuff (a small store if you will).

Anyway, thank you to everyone who's bought the first Virtual Card Club PDF. Sometimes I'm just so overwhelmed that so many of you would actually be interested in it. I'm just sittin' here at my computer, baffled that anyone would want to buy it. It truly is humbling and I'm so thankful for all your support. :)

You've all given me one more thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Again, thanks so much! :)

Finally Friday - Happy Holidays

112108-ff1.jpg Morning, all!

Sorry it's been so silent around here recently (except for the Color Inspiration Challenge post). I've been super busy getting ready for last night's card club--which wasn't really a card at all. It was an entire advent calendar. Anyway, I'm just now getting around to, oh, I don't know... sleeping. :)

It's been a busy week.

Anyhow, here's this week's Finally Friday video that I create for Two Peas in a Bucket. Click here to see the supplies and a bit more info. Sorry about the weird sounding narration... The microphone on my new computer is father away when I'm sitting in my usual chair and I wasn't about to stand up close to the mic through the entire thing. But! I've ordered a separate mic that will hopefully sound better. :)

So, enjoy the video! As as usual, you can catch a higher quality version over at YouTube (just click on "watch in higher quality" below the video).

MACM - Merry Christmas (Woodgrain)

111708-macm1.jpg

(Dude, I keep making MACM cards with the same title... Merry Christmas. I should branch out, eh? Maybe throw in a Happy Holidays or somethin'. ;)

This week's card is all about the glitter! And easy glitter since it's already on the stickers. I LOVE these stickers from Making Memories! So cool! (The red ones I used on this card are sold out at TwoPeas right now, so try the white ones... silver! Sweet!)

Anyhow, enjoy the video! And as usual, you can watch it in higher quality over at YouTube (just click on "watch in higher quality" below the video).

What I did this weekend + photos & recipe

Things I did this weekend:
  • Decorate for Christmas with Jen (yes, it's not even Thanksgiving)
  • Put an autumn wreath on the front door (even though it's Christmas inside, I figured it's still Thanksgiving outside)
  • Baked some dinner rolls for a family gathering tonight. I used my sister's recipe (at the end of this entry... Thanks, sis, for the photos. I totally borrowed them).
  • Finished up some TwoPeas projects (still a few more to go that are due tomorrow... AHH!
  • Started on my card club project for this Thursday. We're making advent calendars. I'll post the finished project once I'm finished.
  • Bought tickets to go see The Forgotten Carols live with the fam and Jen. :)

And the recipe in Marisa's words...

DINNER ROLLS

2 Tbsp. yeast
1/2 cup warm (105º-115º) water
2 Tbsp. sugar
2 cups hot (120º-130º) water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter shortening
2 eggs
2 tsp. salt
7-8 cups flour
butter, melted

Mix together yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, and 2 Tbsp. sugar. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to proof (get all fluffy). Whisk in large mixing bowl 2 cups hot water, 1/2 cup sugar, shortening, eggs, and salt. Add yeast mixture. Add flour one cup at a time. Let dough rise in greased bowl for one hour. Shape; bake at 350º for 16-22 minutes (I baked mine for 18 minutes). Brush with melted butter.

You could let the rolls rise for another hour after you shape them, but I was crunched for time and didn't let them rise again and they turned out just fine. It's just your personal preference.

Okay, here's how I shaped them. I put my left hand into an "OK" shape.

Then, I pinched off enough dough to make about a 1 1/2-inch ball. Instead of rolling the ball, I just put that dough atop the hole I made with my left hand, then pushed it through the hole with the pointer finger of my right hand, while slightly closing the hole. As the dough gets to the end, I pinched it shut and put the seam side down on the greased baking baking sheet. If you look in the top right-hand corner of the picture below, you can see the shaped rolls before they were baked. They look like little white domes. This method of shaping is so easy ... even my four-year-old can do it! (Although, the rolls he makes are quite a bit smaller.)

Finally Friday Video - Noel

111408-ff1.jpg

Morning, all!

I ordered the Making Memories Slice digital cutter from TwoPeas last week and it arrived a few days ago. I was so excited to break it out and start creating! This is the first thing I made with it. :)

Oh, and before I forget, you can see Jennifer McGuire take it for a spin over here. See supplies and additional info over at TwoPeas and watch it in higher quality here.

Enjoy!

Color Inspiration #30

111108-color.jpg

Good morning, all! It's time for another Color Inspiration Challenge. :)

This weeks challenge comes from Bed, Bath & Beyond. This duvet cover caught my eye and I absolutely loved the soothing colors--especially since we've had some intense color challenges as of late. :)

Anyhow, enjoy! And just so you know, I had to delete about 10 links last week because they were not posted correctly. ONLY post links directly to your individual blog entry. NOT to your blog. For example, I would post for this entry "http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/1108/color_inspiration_30.html." Notice how long it is? I would NOT post "http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog." Those of you with Wordpress tend to have shorter entry URLs as well, but for the majority of you out there, you will have a LONG individual entry address.

I will continue to delete links that are not correct. Even if you keep posting them over and over again. It's just easier for my readers to not have to scroll through all your blog entries to find the correct one. Please be considerate of others and follow the rules.

Thank you. I'll now step off my soapbox. :)

Join us: Make a card/scrapbook page/whatever in the colors above. Color Inspiration virgins, please read the Color Inspiration FAQ first.

Deadline: Thursday, November 13 at 7:00 pm MT.
You will know when the deadline has past because you will not able to submit a new link through the Mister Linky box.

Grab this week's swatch-only image.
