Answering Some Questions

So, I'm taking a break from prepping for Convention so I can answer some questions...

What about 2009 calendars. Are you offering them this year?
I thought about it, but I don't think I'll have the calendars this year. It's quite a bit of time to create them, post them, and then be sure to send all those who purchase them the files. So, unfortunately, no I will not be offering calendars this year.

Do you make handmade envelopes?
No, I generally do not. I hate the hassle of making envelopes, so if I know a card is going to be mailed or if it will eventually need an envelope, I stick to standard card sizes.

My card stock warps when embossed. How can I prevent it from warping?
Mine is always warping, too! I asked one of the girls at work who embosses a lot and her only tip for embossing large areas was to emboss in small sections. Just stamp a small section, emboss it, and then the next small section. I think it has a lot to do with patience. :)

Can I use non-Stampin' Up! colors for the Color Inspiration Challenges?
I've read this question quite a few times and answered it just as many. So heads up! :) No, you do not have to use Stampin' Up! colors. Just similar colors.

Can I link to your blog from my blog?
Of course! No need to ask. :)

When I crimp card stock, it starts off straight but eventually ends up crooked. What gives?
Believe me, if I knew a secret to crimping, I'd tell you. Anyone else know a great way to master a paper crimper?

What scissors do you use for cutting ribbon?
I use Stampin' Up!'s Craft and Paper Scissors. They're awesome! I ONLY use them on ribbon. All other "scissoring" is done with Stampin' Up!'s Paper Snips.

Do you ever make a card without ribbon?
*gasp!* Why would I ever do that?! ;) Come on. I know you love the ribbon as much as I do.

What do you do with all the cards you make?
I keep 95% of them until an occasion comes along. Then I already have them done! :) Also, a group of us from work will be starting up an Etsy shop soon and I'll sell some there. I'll be selling cards, but some of the other gals will be selling various other things--including handmade purses! Watch for info on that soon. :)

How do you get your hair so curly?
I own a few different curling irons. I've mentioned them in the past, but in case you were wondering: Anyway, all of these curling irons are awesome and give different types of curl. Wanna see my favorite curly hair video? Watch it here. Another fav video? Try this one!

Do you change your hairstyle every day?
Nope! :) Most of the time it's just plain straight with bangs (aka fringe).

What makeup do you use?
I use a little bit of everything, but my favorites are (specific colors in parenthesis):
And those are all the questions that I received recently. Any more questions? Leave them in the comments. :)

Cheryl:

You used to have the time that you posted items beside the date on your blog site. How come you don't do that anymore? I always looked at the time (guess I am a little strange).

Did you know that you can use Cartville (www.cartville.com) to handle the sales of your calendars? You set up an account and upload your calendar file. Then when people pay you Cartville automatically sends them a unique URL where they can download the file. After 24 hours the URL is no longer good so they can't post the link on a board for lots of other people to use too. It's a great way to sell "files" without having to babysit them and send them out one by one through email. Cartville does it all for you!

I forgot to mention that Cartville takes care of all the money for you too. You just set up a link on your blog and it takes them to Cartville where they enter their payment. I'm not sure how many files you sell or if it would be worth the monthly fee, but it is an option out there.

Hi, Kristina!

The key to super straight crimping is squeezing the crimper handle *before* putting the paper in. Then, as you're squeezing the handle, put your paper in until you feel resistance (this is the striaght edge of your paper, butted up against the straight edge of the crimper, thus a straight crimp). Then twist the crimper dial to push your paper through. This will guarantee perfecty straight crimping, *every single time*. Hope it helps! :)

I LOVE Stila Lip Glaze, too! Banana is my fave. :)

Sarah:

Hola Kristina! I don't have a crimper with a handle so I can't try Lisa's (#4) tip...dangit! Just crimped something on a 80s mania party theme swap I was doing and I seriously had to man handle the paper for the first 7/8 of the way through - then it went past where I could push it against the side with my finger so the end always came out goofy.

Anyway I really hope to see you at convention - I'd love to get my pic with you but feel so silly just walking up to a stranger and asking! :) Maybe that is silly in itself.

I also really really LOVE MAC eyeshadow but haven't tried any of your colors so I'll be checking that out when I get back closer to my MAC store in KC! (I checked SLC already and apparently they don't have just a MAC store...I always check before going on trips!) I have a terrible time getting the pigments to not go everywhere so maybe sometime you can share your secret (or make a video) about that!

See you soon I hope! Gotta get to bed (it is 2:40 here and my flight's at 12:00 - haven't packed yet! Yikes!) :)

Sarah Jane:

OK, so I do have a card-making question for you....
I recently relocated from WI to MN and at my new local post office, they keep telling me that I need to pay more for mailing my cards. They manually FEEL THROUGH the envelope for any kind of bump, whether it be adhesive foam, ribbon, button, etc and claim that anything like that needs to have extra postage because it must be hand-cancelled. Living in WI, I had NEVER had them man-handle my cards LOOKING for a bump and charging extra! An ordinary stamp was always fine there!

So, since you are the QUEEN of ribbons and 3-D foam adhesive, do you ever get charged the 20 cent surcharge?

P.S. The more EXPENSIVE stamps are lovely... done in blues and greens with a beautiful dragonfly on them, but it is the principal of the matter!

Hi Kristina, I have the crimper that SU sells and the secret to get a straight crimp is to make sure that you place the paper in the center of crimper. When I try to crimp with it lined up against the edge it is crooked every time. Since making sure to center the card stock over the handle I get much straighter crimps. I hope this works for someone else too. Thanks for such a wonderful blog.

Bethany:

Hey, K! The paper I emboss used to warp too, but my secret is after you melt the embossing powder (thus warping your card) you warm the UNDERSIDE of the paper. Do this until the card flattens out. Presto! Hope this helps someone.

Hello, I was wanting to know how you prefectly cut the letters you used in this (http://kwernerdesign.com/blog/images/0708/072008-loveyou2.html) card? I finally purchased the stamps as I've seen you use them before and LOVED THEM! Finally caved into buying them and then thought, "wonder how she cut out the circle in the "o" and around the "e"." Perfect!

Thanks!
BTW, LOVE YOUR BLOG.

Regarding the question about crimpers: Jan Tink (Stamps, Paper, Scissors) had a post on her blog not too long ago about crimpers. Can I link it here? Hope so! http://stampspaperscissors.typepad.com/stamps_paper_scissors/2008/05/tool-time---get.html

I'm using mine all the time now - love it for crimping scrap paper to use as 'padding' in an envelope with a bulky/embellished card. Love to use it on seams of packaging (ie: the 'sour cream containers'). I also just used it for a soft, suedey look on my paper that I'm using for a special card, and I really like Janine's crimping of the focal image. Haven't tried it yet, but I like the look.

So, my crimper's actually been out of the drawer and sitting on my table for quite a while now!

First, thanks for the color challenges, those are awesome inspiration!

Second, my trick to the even crimping is the same as someone else mentioned: slide the paper in so that you are starting your crimp in the center of the paper. Crimp from center, out to one edge, then turn the knob the other way and crimp back over the whole sheet to crimp the remaining edge of card stock.

Third, for even embossing, my trick is also similar to one already posted: you need to heat the front and back of the card evenly. One way to assist you in this, is to cover a clipboard with heavy duty tin foil, clip your piece in under the clip, then heat it (watch out and don't burn yourself on a metal clip getting hot!!). The heat reflects back from the tin foil and not only melts your embossing powder faster, it helps heat the back of the card stock at the same time. One last tip--wait at least 10 or even 15 long seconds (one one thousand, two one thousand, etc.) after turning on your heat gun to allow it to warm up before pointing it onto your card stock. No need to heat the card stock until the heat gun is hot enough to actually DO something for you :-)
