The blueprint of a card

Sorry kids. No MACM this week. Why, you ask? This is why...

060208-messyroom.jpg

Yep. I have a messy craft area. It's actually one of the reasons I haven't been too motivated to create anything recently. BUT! That's about to change!

After procrastinating cleaning out my craft room, it's down to just a few days before I HAVE TO have it all done. New roommate Jen moves in this weekend so I need to have it all in order so that she can move her stuff in, too. We'll be sharing the office, and I was definitely taking up more than half my share. :) So, I moved the stamp set shelves into the closet --the walk-in-closet--and I lined the shelves up side by side so I could see the stamp sets easier). There's still a lot of random junk in the closet, but at least my stamps have a home. :)

I'm slowly going through ALL my stuff and giving a lot of it away. Stuff I'm just not too excited about or that I know I'll never get around to using. I'm taking in a big box of stuff to the office this morning to share with the work buddies. But I'm sure I'll have even more tonight when the cleaning commences once again. Speaking of, leave a comment here and I'll randomly pick a name tonight. That person will receive a little somethin' from my stash of giveaway goodies. :)

Anyhow, not too long ago I created some cards for the scrapsupply.com newsletter (see the May 2008 newsletter). As I was cleaning out my craft room I found this notepad (from M.O.):

060208-sketches.jpg

Oh yeah! I forgot I sketched out ideas for this card:

KWmaycard3.jpg

In fact, you might recognize one of the sketches from another card. Which was is it, eh? ;) Anyway, have a happy Monday ya'll and I'll catch you tonight when I post my Color Challenge card and the selections for the last challenge.

I feel your pain! My craft room looks about the same as yours at the moment, hard to get motivated when it looks like teenage boys live here.

Good luck with with cleaning!

I'm organizing my craft space also. It seems to go in waves of looking better and looking worse while things are being sorted! Good luck with your process.

As a fellow messy type I thought you might enjoy the following which I have posted over my desk:
"Those proud of keeping an orderly desk will never know the thrill of finding something they thought they had irretrievably lost"

Enjoy your creative chaos!

My stamp room looks the same- you are right, it really just suck the motivation right out of me. I feel like it's such a big project to clean it up and I'm just not up for the challenge right now.

I just recently went through the same process of purging out the old and making room for the new! Check out my stamp room redo for ideas if you get a chance!

here is my attempt to find a silver lining to that cloud of a job looming over you:

at least it's not the garage! everything you touch is a cute little papercraft item, not a yucky, smelly bag of fertilizer or grimy tool.

hope that helps...

I don't even have a craft room. I have a craft workspace in my utility room. And it stays messy. Here's my theory....messy = creative.

Megan:

I completely understand the frustration with the unorganized craft space. I have to same problem and in turn I to don't have the desire to craft it up as often as I would like.

Don't worry though...a few hours of organizing and you will be ready to craft again!

I feel your pain. When my DD was born, my craft room became her room. Now my stamps are organized and reside in our walk-in closet. I've been sifting through old treasures and trying to decide which beloved stamps need to go to a new loving home.

Good luck and thanks for all you do! You are amazing!

Kathy Souders (Kathy S. on SCS):

I have this same issue. I cannot create in chaos. I do notice that when I take a crafting hiatus and clean my area, I come back with mucho mojo. Can't wait to see what you come up with :)

June 2, 2008 @ 6:50 AM
28

boxes...check, paper...check, ink...check, cardboard boxes...check, chaos...check & double check!

There's nothing like necessity to bring on a good clean-out...that & not being able to see the floor. Hope your re-organising goes well. I'm sure you'll feel totally refreshed to make some creative mess once it's all re-organised.
Best wishes
Di

PS: I'll think of you as I work through my mess tomorrow too!

I just cleaned up my little area and everything was so neat I couldn't create! lol so I had to mess it up again! lol... (but not as messy though ! lol)
Hope your mojo comes running in full force at you soon! :)

Your room looks much like mine right now.... You are so good at inspiring me to create wonderful cards, and now you've inspired me to get that room cleaned up and organized a little bit! Can't wait to see your color challenge card...

June 2, 2008 @ 6:55 AM
34

Oh my, yes, I too am not all that motivated when my zone is crazy. Since I am still in the ever so slow process of organizing it, I just put up some floor to ceiling curtains over the worst area & then just keep my desk in order. Not good to hide the mess, but at least that way no one has to see it.

Let us know how you finally organized it, I'm sure it'll motivate me to "downsize" the mess a bit. Wonderful card, btw!

Jo:

Hmmm, understand about mess = unmovitated. But the bright side of things, you've got a craft room to clean! At the moment the mess on my crafting table, oops I mean kitchen table is getting higer and higher. Soon I won't be able to see my partner who sits at the other end, LOL

Have fun, sometimes there's nothing better than a big cleanout

Cheers

I am doing this today too! We adopted two children a couple of years ago and they got my craft room. I now work from our walk in closet and bedroom. Continual downsizing is a must for me to be able to keep creating. Good luck with your project.

oo oo oo...me me me!
So last week we (as in me and all 4 kiddos) go over to a lady's house that I highly regard. The littles had all been forewarned that we were only playing outside. When she opened the door, the 5 year old says, "oh, I see why we can't go inside, it's because your house is so messy." Humility, it's what kids do best.

Amazing how we still manage to find what we are looking for when our craft rooms look like that, isn't it? You just sit there and say to yourself "I know I saw it.... it's here somewhere..."

Happy spring cleaning to you. Perhaps, you will inspire us all again.... this time, to clean!

Its nice to know that even the pros have days like these. We moved a year ago and I never have settled into my new craft space so I've been completely unmotivated recently.

Will you be posting a picure of how ya got that closet set up? It seems like a nice plan. I hate the scavenger hunt that is adhesive left on counter from project 2 months ago, scissors on top of fridge out of children's reach, stamp set located but one stamp I want MIA, cardstock now located but with stickers from cereal box. Give up and buy a card. You get the idea. Show me your lovely example.

I totally understand how a messy craft area can hinder the creative flow. Fortunately, your craft area really isn't that bad. You'll feel better if you take a look at mine.

I'm proud of you for making room for your new roomie. My DH and I *try* to share an office/stamp room. Mostly I just send him out of the room, with the laptop, so I can stamp.

Hi Kristina, from your picture I can see that you would benefit from Elfa shelving (above your desk and all the way to the left wall) from The Container Store:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/index.jhtml?CATID=77773

It's super easy to install, less than 2 hours for my husband and I. The 2 shelves above your desk are too small for your "awesome-ness".

You can do it!
I found that if I give myself less space (I know that's a bad word) I'll stay more organized. I got a couple of cabinets from IKEA - just like in Stampin Success and filled them up. Now I try to use everything I have because I don't have room to let it pile up.
And when I do get overwhelmed... I just shut the doors and come back later!
Love your work! Thanks for sharing so much with us!

Hi Kristina, Missing your videos here. Can't wait for you to be back sharing how you make your beautiful creations. I hope I get chosen to get some of your supplies you give away. I am a homeschool Mom of a daughter and could really use art material in her art class. My daughter just turned 18 yesterday! I made her a nice card with her favorite colors. I will share it on my blog today. I also have a very messy craft room and you have inspired me to get it organized. It's not going to be easy though, we have a new kitten which seems to play 24-7 and gets into everything, knocking stuff down, etc... Your card sketch is the[Your name is Awesome] card which made it for the featured youtube vid of the day!

NOw I don't feel so bad about my room. I took everything out of it, painted it a very inspiring but bright yellow, moved everything back in and I still have boxes on the floor that have not been put away. That was 2 months ago! Maybe I need to give myself a deadline.

Oh my Lord - you're going to go have time to scroll through all these posts in the midst of your stamp organizing? Holey. "I am woman, hear me roar!" LOL I've never left a comment until now. Thanks so much for all you do and the great postings! Gotten hooked on Last Fm too! LOL I love your cards. I happened to be going through a STAMP IT mag last night and came across a card that I thought "Hey! That looks like a Kristina card..." and sure enough, it was! Issue from 8/7/07 - "You Freakin' Rock" (and I saw the FIND JOY card too).

FYI - some tips I've done in my stamp room.. I use a pants hanger to store my standard wheel stamps. I've placed white labels on the ends of all my SU sets for quick reference (and have retired sets on one shelf and current on another). Happy Organizing!

In my craft room I have shelves lining the top of the entire room. These shelves hold my sentimental artifacts and memories and provides a great place to reflect and find inspiration. We are nothing without those memories that make us, I feel.

I understand about the MACM (sniff, sniff).
My crafting area looks the same right now, maybe even worse.
It's hard to get motivated but then you reach a point and you say, "enuf is enuf".

Hope you come back soon!

BTW, I really think that you should have a MACT, MACW, MACTH, MACF, MACS, and MACSunday.
MACM isn't enuf :)

Love your work. Your blog is the first thing I go to when I turn my computer on. A good cleaning is necessary every once in a while. You'll stumble upon things you've forgotten all about, and your creative wheels will begin turning. I can't wait to see the results!!

I just recently did that, and it felt SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good! I was totally excited about my stuff again (the stuff that I kept), someone who needed crafting items got a ton of stuff (a woman who had had a house fire and lost all of her supplies), and I found things that I had forgotten I'd bought! Plus, it's so great for the creativity to have a clean space...I've been cranking out stuff like crazy in the past couple of weeks since I did it! Keep it up! It's so worth it!! :o)

I can understand why you don't feel creative, my craft space looks the same. I told myself today that if I cleaned my kitchen then I could watch macm. I love the card and sketches.. I am so glad to see that super woman is really HUMAN... I try so hard to keep my space clean. I really enjoy when I have the time to clean and organize my little space... I think it's because it's the only room that I have total control of. For the most part no one goes in there but me and the 4 year old shadow... With his games... Of which I end up picking up... The door to the storage room is in my room so sometimes the odds and ends get put outside the door. I recently purged and gave all the extra to my DD she love having all the new stuff....

Ok, I have to post again. I just read a lot of the comments posted and think people have forgotten... didn't your mother take your desk with her when she moved? That's why the craftroom is in such an uproar...you just need a little time to reorganize your recently changed workspace. You can do it and then we'll all benefit from your newly charged creativity.

Hi... have missed you. Regarding your question - the sketch was for "Hello, your name is AWESOME!"
I also love the 'so proud' too... change to fit a child's favorite color(s) and you have a very uplifting and encouraging card!
Take your time fixin up your craft space and ask: "Have I used it in the last 6 months, year?" If not, give it to someone who can use it. Just a rule of thumb I go by...

Oh my goodness! As I write this you have had 289 messages! If that isn't popular, I dont know what is!

Good luck with the mess - I just think you are lucky enough to have a room dedicated to your craft. Mine is the kitchen table and all of my craft materials are packed away in boxes at the top of the stairs so that my little man doesn't get to it!

Take heart, just think of the clarity of mind you'll have once it's all neat and tidy (coming straight from the mouth of a neat freak!) I too need to do some organizing, I wish someone was moving in with me to give me that same motivation! Love your designs! Thanks for that!

Don't feel bad my room often looks like that. I cleaned it up not to long ago and love it, but I am also little afraid of messing it up again, which is a good thing. You will enjoy having your room all nice and tidy when you are done. I love your blog and your videos. Thank you for sharing.

I bought a fold down wall mounted table from Ikea yesterday so that I could carve out a stamping area in my guest room. I am taking over the guest room closet to organize my stuff so that I can have a space to play.

Good luck on the cleaning! Yeah...I just got my craft room all cleaned out..I was so excited about it...couldn't wait to get in there and CREATE....and then my youngest son informs me that he and his girlfriend (not WIFE) and their baby are moving in with us for "awhile" so they can save enough money to get a place of their own. Oh how I wish I had a craft room to organize! I must say I am addicted to your blog and love your cards. Also am impressed that you are a Mac user as that's all I've ever owned…and so thankful for their many fine qualities. I am so very happy to know I am not the only person who has a craft room that looks like that. I just finished boxing up all of my supplies so I can paint and reorganize my craft room. I chose a color very close to Bashful Blue. I think it will look really nice with the white trim and dark hardwood floors. I also purchasesd some slotwall and acrylic bins so everything can have a home. I'm excited to finish it. I will post a photo of the finished room on my blog. I was way too embarrassed to show a photo of the "before". I admire your courage! Keep up the great work, your cards are awesome.

I so feel your pain :) It is so hard to get motivated when your space is a mess. I am on bedrest and could probably put a big dent in my scrapping if my room wasn't in the same shape :) Good luck - let me know if you find a scraproom cleaning lady for hire :)! Can't wait for the next MACM - it has been missed.

I too have a craft room that is a work in progress. I hope to get it finished this summer when I am off from teaching kindergarten. Only 9 more days. Wahoo! Don't worry about missing MACM. We love you so much we can wait another week.

I totally understand your lack of inspiration. Not only is my craft room a mess, but I moved some stuff into the dining room so that I would have some room to make some things, and now that is a mess too. I have to get it all cleaned up this week. However, I would still love some free goodies, and with all of my cleaning, I am sure I will be able to find it a good home. :)

I'm also going through office cleaning and making space for stamps. I have a big craft table but I have so much materials, I only have a 2x2" space to work on ;-). My floor and my sofa have become 'tables' as I have things on them. My boyfriend won't enter my room. He thinks he will hurt himself ;-) Anyway, best wishes in cleaning up your office and I'd love to see an AFTER picture!

Ahh, how I wish I had a dedicated stamping area. As a mother of three little ones it's hard to find space for socks let alone stamps these days. I have one corner of what used to be our dining room. I cannot wait to move into a house with five bedrooms so I can finally have my Studio set up!
