Color Inspiration #1

031108-youarefabulous1.jpg

Hi all! I want to try something new around here. How about some color combinations, eh? I love to see different color combinations and I get a lot of inspiration from photos of interiors. Interior design magazines, blogs, and books are an endless source of interesting color combinations.

Today's color inspiration comes from Marie Clair Maison via Design Sponge. Granted, I can't read a thing on her website (help!), but the photos and interiors on the site are amazing!

031108-colors-inspiration.jpg

This combo is so... so girly! I love it! Anyhow, if you convert the colors in the photo to Stampin' Up! colors (or any other company's card stock colors), you might get:

031108-colors.jpg
Chocolate Chip, Purely Pomegranate, Pumpkin Pie, Pretty in Pink

So, I took that color combo and made a card using the same colors. However, I was completely out of Chocolate Chip card stock (Gasp! Tragic!) so I used some of my Bazzill Bling card stock that's been hanging around. :)

EDITED TO ADD: Oh! I forgot! These Color Inspiration posts are going to be challenges for ya'll. Make a card or scrapbook page using the color combo and then leave a link in the comments. I want to see what you make! :)

031108-youarefabulous.jpg

You Are - Card base card stock: Bazzil Bling from Bazzill; Lots of Letters chipboard, Absolutely Fabulous and Three For You stamp sets, Pumpkin Pie and Purely Pomegranate card stock, Pretty in Pink craft ink, Pumpkin Pie ink, VersaMark ink, heat & stick powder, Dazzling Diamonds glitter, and Winter White detail embossing powder: Stampin' Up!.

Let me just toot your horn for you: you your very self designed the totally cool "absolutely fabulous" stamp! It looks so great on this card.

Love this color combo...I use the chocolate and pinks together a little too much so I really like the addition of the pumpkin. You should just start posting your own Inspiration Challenges for all of us kwerner groupies!

Dena:

So it is your handwriting in that stamp set??! I thought it might be . . . am I wrong?

Count me in as a groupie! Even my 4 year old runs to see what "that card lady" is making!

Kristina says:Yep! That'd be me! :)

I wouldn't worry about the lack of chocolate chip cardstock; that Bazzil bling is perfect! The texture looks amazing, and the color combination is inspiring! Must. Go. Buy. Some.

Oh my, what a beautiful creation here. Yes, I would love, love color inspiration. I was even thinking about making a color inspiration journal! Thanks for starting up color challenges, I'm up for it.
I cracked up when you said you were out of CC CS, cause girl you have everything. Are you able to pick it up at work? I'm curious.

Kristina says: Actually, I'll just order a full pack of the card stock. I use it so much that I usually order as much as I can. :)

Great idea - thank you! I always try to do a some cards when you inspire me with MACM, so this one will be another challenge. Love these colors on this one, to, so hopefully I can get some out!

One question - how do we upload a pic in this comment space? Or do we email you directly? Thanks again for all the inspiration!

Kristina says: You'll actually have to upload it to a different website and then leave the address (or link) in a comment. You could upload to splitcoaststampers.com, twopeasinabucket.com, or flickr.com. Of course, if you have a blog you could put it there, too.

Hope that helps! Thanks for the question!

Hmmm, want another place to get great color ideas? I do so, so love this lady's blog for exactly that:
http://color-stripes.blogspot.com/

She's in Italy (I think) and seems very... European (KWIM?). I love the photos she takes, and how she breaks the colors down for you!

And (!) pink & chocolate are gorgeous! Of course, all of your cards are. :)

Hi Kristina!

Just wondering how you got those colour dots on your post? I am guessing you used the hex codes? that the SU colours are nad then pasted a circle of that colour in your post? I would love to be able to create a file of swatches to play around with the SU colours.

By the way... I had fun at the live chat yesterday!

Kristina says: I used a design program to make that graphic. If you're familiar with Photoshop, you can do the same thing by drawing circles. I actually prefer using card stock swatches when I come up with color combos. That might be easier. Just cut pieces of card stock (2" x 2" works great) and then put them on a ring. Hope that helps!

And I loved the chat, too! Thanks for joining me!

Emilie:

Again, another super inventive idea, yippi! I have to admit I tend to use the same color combination again and again (guilty!), and when I try to use other ones, I am less excited about the project I am making... Oh well!

I am very (as in I NEED to know) curious about the "Absolutely Fabulous" stamp that looks like your handwritting: what brand is it and where can we buy it??? I do not have a beautiful and artistic handwritting like yours and I want it!

Thank you and keep up your good work!

Kristina says: Yes, I designed that stamp set. It's a stamp set found in Stampin' Up!'s Spring-Summer 2008 catalog (US and Canada). And thanks!

Hey Kristina! I love this idea. Sadly, it seems that the only time I have time to stamp is if I have a swap or challenge to do - so this is great! I get lots of my color combos from the Pier One catalog - you'll have to check one out!

Firstly, thanks again for the live chat. I felt like a little bit of a knob, not muting the other cameras for the first 5 minutes I was on, but what can I say, I guess I'm challenged at times.

Loved the dazzlin' diamonds you used in your 'you are' card. Here's my submission to your challenge!

I love this card! Perfect color combo for fall I think. Or any season really! :) I especially like the chipboard you use. I know that it says it's Lots of Letters chipboard, but where can I purchase that? I tried looking online and can't seem to find it. Also, how do you make it all glittery?

Keep up the fantastic work! Watching MACM or other videos is the "reward" I allow myself for getting my homework done! :)

Thanks,
Kalyn

Love this color combo...Since I don't have any Stampin Up! paper, I tried to substitute, but my papers don't have quite the pop that they should. Anyways, here's my card, and thanks for the challenge! (the colors look washed out in my photo, but maybe because it's a rainy day?)

Wonderful challenge - that is a beautiful combo. I missed the chat :(

Here's mine, but Blogger has an outage scheduled right now, so check it later if you don't have any luck for a while - they didn't say when it would end, but it starts in two minutes! Please look at my card when it's done! :)

Oh, Kristina - a question.

I do graphic design too and was wondering the same thing about the RGB or CMYK values for the SU colors. Do they publish them? It would be awesome for correcting my card photos and doing my tutorials.

L.

Kristina says: I would suggest looking at SU!'s online catalog (at stampinup.com). They have the colors listed near the beginning of the catalog. Just take a screen capture and then use the eye-dropper tool for the color you want. :) Hope that helps!

Kristina,
I am so excited about your color challenges! I didn't have time right away but I had a chance last night and I love this color combo. Funny, I was chatting with my friend Wendy this morning about how you should make your handwriting a font. I love my Ab Fab set, purchased because of the sentiments and the script! And now I feel like I know a secret. :D So, IS your handwriting a font somewhere for purchase? Thank You!!!!

OMGoodness, I don't know what rock I've been under, but I just stumbled across your blog this morning and spent way too long looking at your wonderful color inspirations and learning how to paint my nails :) I don't have any Sahara Sand paper so I just went back and did the very first combo that you posted because I loved it. I know I'm way late but I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration!!!
