Also note that the CD jewel case sized calendars fit into a slim jewel case. Just turn the case back as far as it can go until it stands up (see the photos below for an example).

Video Tutorial: Heidi Swapp Masks

102807-thanks-banner.jpg

102807-thanks.jpg By special request, today's post focuses on Heidi Swapp masks.

I'd never used one of these masks until ScrapFest last month when I took a Heidi Swapp techniques class. These masks are actually pretty cool. And for those of us who love paint and ink, it's awesome!

So far, I haven't been able to get a clean and crisp edge to the images, but I'm not sure that's the intent. Also, if you use an acrylic ink and make sure the edges are really stuck down, I bet you could get a nice edge.

Anyway, here's the tutorial. I really like how the card turned out. I think it might be one of my recent favorites. :)

BTW, thanks to everyone who has purchased my calendar design. I really think you'll like it.

Thanks - Kraft card stock and Chocolate Chip wide grosgrain ribbon: Stampin' Up!; mask and chipboard letters: Heidi Swapp; brads: American Crafts; ink: ColorBox.

2008 Calendars

102707-calendars2008b.jpg

Some of you might remember the calendars I made last year for my co-workers. Well, you can make them now, too! The cost is $10.95 and you can print/assemble however many you'd like. These make great gifts for just about anyone. :)

Just click the "Buy Now" button below. After I receive your PayPal payment, I'll email you the PDF file. There are four pages, as shown below. All you have to do is print them out (I suggest textured cardstock for the actual calendars because it looks nice, and plain cardstock for the band and tag), and then assemble them. Super easy! Be sure to check out the video of how to assemble it as well.

Text on band:
2008 calendar
made for you because you rock
(thanks for all you do)

Text on tag:
happy holidays

UPDATE #1: I've added an additional sheet (making it five total). The fifth sheet is the band, but with simplified text (as was suggested, it only says "2008 calendar"). You can choose whether to use the band above, or the simplified version.

UPDATE #2: To order the calendar, please go to this entry. There are more options available now.

October Stamp Club

102407-club1.jpg

102407-club2.jpg 102407-club3.jpg Hi all! Tomorrow night is my monthly stamp club. The hostess this month (Hi Kelli!) requested the candy bar sliders that we made at a stamp camp last spring. My stamp club girls weren't able to come to the camp, so these sliders are new to them. Also, I don't own any specific Halloween sets, so Holiday Blitz once again saved me. I've used this set more than any other set I own! :)

(You can find instructions for the candy bar sliders here).

We're also making a small 3x3 card. Kelli requested a card that she can attach to wedding gifts, but I made the card a bit more generic so that it can be used on many different things, including wedding gifts.

Here's a tip for workshop projects for all you demonstrators: I originally designed this card to have the heart/circle stamped directly on the white band of card stock. However, it was difiicult to get the stamp perfectly centered, and I knew it would be a struggle and irritation for all my club girls to do the same. So, I decided to pop the image off the band by stamping it separately, punching it out, and then adhering it with a Stampin' Dimensional. All in all, I think I like it a bit better that way anyway. :)

Anyway, I'm off to bed. I'm still catching up on sleep after the trip. 'Night all!

Happy Halloween - All supplies from Stampin' Up! All Holidays and Holiday Blitz stamp sets; Pumpkin Pie, Whisper White, and vellum card stock; Creepy Crawly Designer Series Paper; Pumpkin Pie and Old Olive markers; Jet Black StazOn ink; Basic Black grosgrain; 1-3/8" and 1-1/4" circle punches; crimper.

Heart 3x3 - All supplies from Stampin' Up! Holiday Blitz stamp set; Purely Pomegranate, So Saffron, and Whisper White card stock; Old Olive Prints Designer Series Paper; Scallop Circle, 1-1/4" Circle, and Corner Rounder punches.

New York Inspired 1

102307-nyc3.jpg

102307-nyc2.jpg Hi all! I'm finally back in town. Back to the regular schedule. :)

I had tons of fun in New York City! It was awesome! Anway, I thought I'd use some pictures from the trip for inspiration for card for the next fews days. This first card was inspired by a peeling sign I saw in Chinatown. An awesome new friend at Basic Grey (hey Jen!) sent me some paper to try out and when I saw it I knew it was perfect for this card!

The paper I used is from their Periphery Collection, and it's awesome! I've always loved Basic Grey stuff because it's so grungy and eclectic. The graphic designer in me just loves all the layering they include in their artwork. I tend to go more graphic and clean, but sometimes a girl's gotta break out of her usual routine, ya know? :)

So this is a bit of a messier card for me. Definitely a challenge and departure from what I usually do. Hmmm... Do you like it?

I'll also leave you with a couple videos. The first is self-explanatory, and the second... well, I used a song in it, so I couldn't put it on Revver. Hopefully the YouTube video works. :) Enjoy! BTW, here's a shout out to the lovely Annie who is in the videos. Hey Annie!

Hey U - Defining Alphabet stamp set, Basic Gray ink, and 1/8" hole punch: Stampin' Up!; date stamp: 7Gypsies; textured card stock: Bazzill; patterned paper: Basic Grey; ribbon: Fancy Pants; buttons and thread: unknown.

Home Tonight

Okay, kids. I'm coming home tonight! New York has been fun, but I'm definitely ready to go home. Super tired.

In fact, I'm writing this as we ride the bus from New Jersey into the city (cheaper to stay outside of Manhattan).

Anyway, I can't wait to get back to Utah and my regular schedule. I'll definitely crash and sleep the minute I get home.

More Christmas

101807-2u1.jpg

101807-2u2.jpg Hi all! Another Christmas card tonight. I made this last night, but saved it to share today. And thanks for letting me know what you consider essential for your papercrafting. By far, the most common answers were: paper trimmer and scissors (paper snips or ribbon scissors, specifically). Thanks for the input! I love to hear how ya'll papercraft, too. :)

Anyway, I bought some more metal edged tags a while back and really wanted to use one with a felt Thicker (American Crafts), so this is what I came up with. The large circle was cut out of the patterned paper using the Coluzzle. The striped pattern paper is adhered to the card using Stampin' Dimensionals.

Doesn't that ribbon tying make you think of a present! Speaking of presents, I'll have to do a bit of holiday shopping on my trip.

While I'm on my trip, I'll also keep my eyes peeled for some cool papercrafting ideas, too. Kind of along the lines of, "How and where can I find inspiration?" A bit of "homework" for me. I'll take lots of pictures to show ya'll. :)

While I'm gone, I'll try to update a bit, but I can't guarantee anything. I return to Utah on Monday, so I'll see you guys for sure Tuesday morning!

Merry Christmas 2 U - Typeset Numbers set, Real Red card stock, Garden Green ink, Certainly Celery wide grosgrain ribbon, paper piercing template, and metal edged tag: Stampin' Up!; patterned paper and felt Thicker letter: American Crafts.

Christmas Thoughts

101707-peacejoy1.jpg

101707-peacejoy2.jpgIf any of you have been following what I've been listening to over the past few days, you know I've been breaking out the Christmas music a bit early. Well, a bit early for anyone else besides me. ;)

I've always loved Christmas! I love everything about that time of year, so without fail, I usually start my Christmasing a bit earlier than most. This spills over into my card making as well.

This card came as such a suprise to me! Sometimes when you're creating, things just pull together. Call it fate, call it inspiration--it rocks! I was on a roll after I made this little card, I had to make another (watch for it tomorrow). You can also click on the card to see it larger. :)

Using a stamp-a-ma-jig is essential when stamping those thin-lined letters. And I also used it to place the ampersand (in Sahara Sand so that it fades a bit into the background). So break out those stamp-a-ma-jigs! If you don't have one, or rarely use the one you have, you need to go grab it (or buy it) now! My stamp-a-ma-jig is a permanent fixture on my crafting desk.

What supplies never leave your craft area? I want to know. What is essential for you?

Peace & Joy - ABC Alphabet, Letterpress Numbers, and Sparkling Holiday sets, Real Red and Whisper White card stock, and Real Red and Sahara Sand ink: Stampin' Up!; patterned paper and ribbon: American Crafts.

Counting

101607-counting1.jpg

101607-counting2.jpg Do you ever feel like all you ever do is count things? That numbers rule too much of your life? 1, 2, 3, 4.

Tonight I made a simple journal page for my 8x8 journal album (click small image to see it larger). Nothing special. During the stress of getting things done before the trip to NY this weekend, I get a little overwhelmed. Just reminding myself to step back and just breathe.

Do you need a reminder, too?

Pumpkins! + Winner #7

pumpkins-101507.jpg

Hi all! Pumpkin carving tonight was fun! I haven't carved a pumpkin in ages! Anyway, after a slight mishap in the parking lot (my pumpkin fell off the trunk of the car and broke), Annie and I decided to share a pumpkin. :) We tag-teamed it: she helped toast all the pumpkin seeds, I carved it, and then she gave it a home for Halloween.

So I carved a happy looking face. It sort of looked like Shrek, so I added the little ears. :) The other pumpkin belongs to Annie's roommate Amber (she's the third traveler in our little NYC group and she's adorable!).

Speaking of NYC, we fly out Friday night. I'll try to post little updates while we're gone, but I can't guarantee anything. I haven't yet figured out to post pictures straight from my phone (my laptop's staying home this time). I'll for sure be updating my Twitter status regularly.

----------------

Winner #7: Alex, who commented at 5:15 tonight. Congrats, Alex! I'll email you shortly so you have respond back with your mailing address.

Thanks again everyone for joining in the fun this week with the giveaways. I'll do these every once in a while for sure. :)

Hello! I'm writing my first entry from my iPhone (love it!). So this is gonna be quick. :) I closed comments on yesterday's entry so that I dan draw winners tonight. I won't be posting the winner until a bit later though-- I'm off to carve a pumpkin at Annie's. I'll take a picture if my pumpkin isn't hideous. Lol!

Giveaway #7 + Answering Questions

I hope this entry is informative. It took a long time to type! Anyway, here's a video for you tonight, and then we'll get to some answers to some of your questions, and end with the winner for yesterday's giveaway.

Mentioned in the video:
Basic Grey Precision Filing Set (buy here)

---------------------

Answers to your Questions:

Christine: How is your cake decorating class coming?
My class was great! It was only four weeks so it's been over for a while now, but I can't wait to bake some cakes this holiday season.

April: I actually am on a DT for your cousin Mandy and she got me hooked on your blog!
Okay, so that wasn't really a question, but I want to respond. I LOVE Mandy! She's adorable. Seriously, ya'll need to go check out her albums. My aunt (her mom) visited us from Arizona a couple months ago and brought one of the albums with her. She was working on an album for our grandparents. Totally cute. Check it out!

Lisa M: What markers do you use for your projects?
The only markers I use on a regular basis are from Stampin' Up!, specifically Stampin' Write Markers.

Sarah: Currently, I subscribe to Paper Crafts magazine. By chance, do you happen to have any recommendations on other magazines that I shouldn't miss?
I subscribe to Memory Makers, Scrapbooks Etc., and Creating Keepsakes. All three are great scrapbooking magazines, but I also like to browse through Cards and Paper Trends (both by Northridge Media).

Rhonda: What type of transparancy sheets do you use?
I use regular run of the mill transparency sheets. I got them at Office Depot and they're the Office Depot brand.

Susie: Any differences between the SU! textured and Bazzill's?
I don't notice a huge difference besides the fact that Stampin' Up! textured card stock is guaranteed to match all the inks and ribbons.

Sandi: Why do you use StazOn vs. [Stampin' Up!'s] Basic Black?
I use StazOn only in certain cases: I'll be watercoloring, using a blender pen, or I need to a good whiff of almond extract. ;) Seriously though, I'll use whatever is nearest. If I happen to have StazOn closer than my Basic Black, I'll use StazOn. I haven't tried coloring in stamped images with markers, but I imagine StazOn would work a bit better than Basic Black. Anyone have more experience with this? Leave a comment and let me know.

Maryjo: I do love the smell of Stazon also. Are we crazy?
No, not crazy at all. I love the smell of almond extract. It makes me think of baking cookies. Yum. :)

Mercedes: Are you waiting anxiously for Battlestar Galactica Razor?
Ya know, I know practically nothing about it! Can you believe that? My brother and dad just recently mentioned it and I was all, "What?" I'm not a regular Sci-Fi Channel watcher, so I didn't know about it.

Lisa: For some reason my [origami] box lids are always too big. You can never see the bottom part of the box.
The top and bottom of the box are pretty much the same size. :) When I put them together, I just don't push the top all the way down. That way, the pattern on the bottom can be seen.

Pattie T.: Are the edges indeed sewn (see card here)? I'd like to see how this is done. I can't imagine a machine not bending the paper.
No, I used faux stitching on that particular card. Faux stitching is when you use a paper piercer (or needle or some other pointy object) and pierce holes in the card stock. Then connect the dots with a while gel pen. BUT! I have sewn on card stock with a sewing machine (see an example here). It take a bit of getting used to, but it can be done and it won't bend the paper.

Two questions from Sharon: (1) Is there a reason you work on a cutting pad? (2) I also noticed you stamp the background the same way I do, basically "eyeballing" the placement. But I was surprised you took the time & effort to use your stamp placement thingie...you don't eyeball that too?
I usually work on Stampin' Up! grid paper, which is on top of the cutting mat. I use the black cutting mat for videos only since it's sometimes hard to see white cardstock on the grid paper. As for using the Stamp-a-ma-jig, I use it quite a bit when I need a stamped image in a particular spot (letters, images on a super small piece of card stock, etc). But for backgrounds and images that will be punched or cut out, I'll "eye-ball" it.

Danielle: Do you really use your stampa-ma-jig a lot? Do you buy extra sheets for it or just clean it off somehow?
Yes, I use it quite a bit. I like the imaging sheets that come with the Stamp-a-ma-jig (and clean them off with a spray of of stamp cleaner), but I also like to use vellum card stock. With the vellum, you can stamp every letter in an alpha stamp set, and then keep the sheets in the box with the stamps. Then they're always there and ready to go!

Renee: How did you set up your camera [for video]? Did you use one of those posable tripods?
You'd laugh if you saw it! It's really pathetic actually. I have an architect's lamp on my desk (with positional arm), so I tied my camera to the top with some ribbon! It looks atrocious, but you guys would never know. :)

Lisa M: Ok I have to ask.... where do you get all of these awesome stamps?
Lots of the my stamps are Stampin' Up!, but I do have some from other various companies. I'm an avid online shopper--I mostly buy from twopeasinabucket.com, amillionlittlethings.com, and scrapbook.com.

Marie: I'm actually curious if you could show me the inside of the card where the YoYo yellow is adhered (on this card). I'd like to see how you "finish" it, and if you do it the way I do, which is to just adhere it there and leave that strip of color visible.
I don't have a picture for you, but that's exactly how I finished it. I just left the strip showing.

---------------

Winner of Giveaway #6: Mary, who commented at 10:04 this morning. Mary, I'll email you shortly.

Giveaway #7: It's the last giveaway! It's been so fun to read all your comments all week long. Love them! Anyway, the seventh winner will receive American Crafts ribbon. See which ribbon here.

Leave a comment on this entry and I'll draw a name tomorrow night. :)

New Design

So I went a little crazy and shook things up a bit. New design here at kwernerdesign blog. I know, I know. I was going Pink for October, but I've had this redesign under wraps for a few weeks and I couldn't wait any longer!

Some of you noticed that I've added ads to the site over the last couple of weeks. This is mostly to cover the cost of keeping my blog up and running (I have my own domain and webhosting: Yahoo Small Business, it's awesome!). Anyway, I wanted to make it a bit easier on the eyes for all of you.

So hopefully the ads won't be in your way anymore. :) I also added some additonal pages. The "about me" page is back, and there's also a FAQ. If any of you have more questions you'd like to see there, send me an email. Thanks!

Giveaway #4

101107-babyboybox.jpg

Hi all! Tonight's creation was partly inspired by a question I saw recently. Unfortunately I don't recall who asked, but the person wondered what an origami box would look like made out of vellum.

Well, this is what it looks like. Unfortunately vellum card stock is very brittle and hard to work with (as can be seen in the torn edge). I'm sure regular vellum would be easier. Anyway, it's pretty cool to work with.

This box and the cards inside could be a gift that a baby shower host gives to the new mom. Just some simple cards she can use to thank those who help out around the baby's birth. :)

---------------

Giveaway #3's winner is Pat S. who commented at 3:52 this afternoon. Pat, I'll email you shortly.

The prize for the fourth giveaway is chipboard shapes (see the exact ones here). These shapes are awesome! We used some at ScrapFest last month and they make the cutest cards!

Good luck! Leave a comment and your number might be picked! :)

The trend forecast is "clear"

Many of you have probably noticed that there's a big trend right now in scrapbooking and papercrafting of using transparencies or acetate on projects. It's actually been around quite a while, and I have to agree with the people who love using transparency sheets--they are so fun!

For some reason, I had the idea of using a stamp from Stampin' Up!'s So Many Sayings set. I saw the stamp and I just knew I have to use it on a transparency! I stamped the words using White StazOn and then I was in business.

BTW, the card is held together with two staples at the fold.

So Many Love Sayings - Card stock: Chocolate Chip (SU!) and white textured (Bazzill); stamps: Little Pieces and So Many Sayings (SU!); inks: Pretty in Pink, Certainly Celery, and Pale Plum (SU!); Whisper White taffeta ribbon (SU!); transparency sheet.

Another box in my craft room

So besides the AC box (still gasping!), I have another box in my craft room. It's a box I made last night and didn't have a chance to upload. Just a simple origami box made out of Charbon Designer Series Paper from Stampin' Up!, and a little Old Olive wide grosgain. :)

I'll have to make some cards to go inside, huh?

I've also been tagged by an awesome real-life and online friend Colleen. Here are 7 facts unknown facts about me:

1. I once hide from my grandparents in a closet in my room. Actually saw them walk into the room, but just stood in the closet and held my breath. What if they would have found me, standing in my bedroom closet in the dark? CRAZY! It was a long long time ago and there's a hilarious story behind why I was doing it! Don't tease me!

2. I drive a silver Mazda3 named Maggie.

3. I once planned a six-day trip to New York City over Thanksgiving and only spent $700 for the entire trip (including airfare, hotel, food, and 3 Broadway shows). Yep, I'm a thrifty traveler.

4. I go through fingernail painting phases. Generally my nails are always short, but every once in a while I'll grow them out and start painting them. Then I'll remember what a hassle it is to make sure they look nice and I'll cut them and go back to short nails. :)

5. I have over 83GB of music and videos on my computer... Music/movie obsessed? No, just iTunes Music Store obsessed.

6. Every once in a while, I'll read a cheesy romance novel. Nothing trashy, but a good light read is a great escape. :)

7. Guilty pleasure TV? Gossip Girl. I admit it. I didn't want to like it, but I kinda do. Speaking of, it starts in 10 minutes. Gotta go...

I received my very last (*sniff sniff) package from American Crafts today. I was expecting just some Thickers since they were mistakenly left out of our boxes a while ago, but not all this! WOW! American Crafts is so generous! Especially to the outgoing members of the design team.

Thanks, Sarah and all you AC peeps! All of this will be put to good use. :)

A Conversation at Work 2

Me: Ya know, some days it's so amusing sitting next to Patti.
Patti: Only some days?
Me: Well, I don't want to put pressure on you to be amusing every day.
Patti: There's no pressure. That's just how I am.

;)
