Cake Confessions (Cake #1)

Taking a page from Sarah's book, here are my cake confessions:

1. My kitchen is a mess. Icing everywhere (or it seems like that). Who knew making a cake was so messy!

2. I now have an appreciation for pre-colored frosting. I wish I would have gone by this color mixing cheat sheet instead of venturing out on my own.

3. Tonight's class was mostly about learning to use star tips. Not my most favorite look, but I took a crack at it anyway. Everyone did lots of practice rows of star tips, and then we all decorated a cake. The course manual tells everyone to make a rainbow cake, but I did my own thing. What do you think? It's my first time really using tips for decorating (well, for anything besides a HUGE swirl of icing on top of a cupcake--that doesn't count!)

(Please ignore the wonky lighting--I took the photos as I was packing up my things to leave class).

:)

Mmmmmmm, cake plus a showdown of 4 fab dancers ... that's a good evening. :) And I'll say no more about the show, just in case you see this before you finish watching it ... but WOW! :)

What a beautiful cake ... the circles are great and I am amazed at how smooth the base icing is ... what's your secret?

This cake is gorgeous! I love the polka-dots :)
But what it mainly says to me is: go try a card color combo of soft sky, purely pomegranate and gable green!

Your cake looks great... very cute. I remember all the messiness all too well. I don't think I could get the sweet off my fingers for a long time.

I have to say, you did a great job of smoothing your icing. That takes a lot of skill. Great job!

I bookmarked your blog awhile ago when I came across it on Splitcoast. I love your cards and your cake is adorable! I took a cake decorating class and my first cake wasn't nearly as cute...I did some flowers instead of the rainbow :-)

Thanks for all your comments, guys! Tisha, I used the "faux fondant" technique that I found at cakecentral.com. It's found under Articles > How To Create Faux Fondant (The Paper Towel Method / Viva). I however did not use a paper towel--I used parchment paper. It did take a bit of time to smooth it all out, but I liked the look better. :)

Beautiful cake Kristina!! I'd love to have a bite! :0) It's got to be so hard to cut into that gorgeous creation after all that hard work! It looks like a great card design too. The colors, the layout, the circles and stars. Thanks for sharing and the inspiration!

Great job on the cake. I have a kitchen aid mixer and have never made anything as beautiful as that.
